Why competency-based assessment actually works
MastaLearn Team 28 Jul 2026

Competency-based curricula promise mastery for every learner. The gap between promise and classroom comes down to evidence tracking.
The evidence problem
Most teachers don't struggle with the philosophy — they struggle with recording it. If tracking competencies costs more time than teaching them, the system collapses.
One notebook, three columns
Date, competency, one line of evidence. Photograph the page weekly. That is genuinely enough to report progress and plan intervention — and it survives a term without burnout.
Assessment is for the learner
The moment tracking becomes a reporting exercise rather than feedback to the learner, it stops working. Keep the learner in the loop and the records take care of themselves.
