Marking Student Papers

Practise examiner-level marking on a sample script with its marking guide, then mark a past paper of your own and submit the marked paper as your Marked Student Sample portfolio.

Student A — end-of-unit progress test (practice script · 20 marks)

Award marks to Student A's answers using the marking guide, exactly as an examiner would. Then upload your own past paper to read and mark, and submit the marked paper as your portfolio.

1. State two reasons why a teacher records learner progress continuously during the term, not only at examination time.

Student A: "Continuous records show how each learner is progressing during the term and they give the teacher evidence to change teaching before the final exam."

Marking guide: 1 mark per valid reason (max 2) + 1 mark per explanation of the benefit (max 2).

2. A learner's score fell from 68% to 41% between two CATs. Describe two actions the teacher should take and justify each action.

Student A: "The teacher should analyse the paper to find the weak topics and then give remedial teaching on those topics. The teacher should also meet the learner to discuss revision habits."

Marking guide: 1 mark per action identified (max 2) + 2 marks per justification (max 4).

3. Explain how a rubric supports fair marking of an open-ended task.

Student A: "A rubric lists the criteria and the levels so every answer is judged against the same standard and not against the teacher's mood."

Marking guide: 1 mark per valid point: criteria, level descriptors, consistency, transparency, feedback link (max 5).

4. Describe how you would moderate marking across three teachers marking the same test in your department.

Student A: "Each teacher marks the same sample script, then the department compares scores, discusses differences and agrees the standard before marking the rest."

Marking guide: 1 mark per step: sample selection, independent marking, comparison, discussion, agreed standard (max 5).
